Nakijinjou Castle

Monday 20 August 2007

Nakijinjo. Built around the 13th century it is believed that the castle grew overtime to its present size. Like most other castles in Okinawa, this castle was established as a place of religion and thus lacked facilities such as a donjon, turrent or Kuruwa. Sacred places like a fire-god shrine, Ibe and praying nooks are scattered around the grounds. Artifacts have been found on the site that suggests trading with the Ming and Geng dynasties in China. This can be confirmed by the castle being mentioned in the Ming-jitsu-roku, published in China around the 14th century.
